2012 MOVIE, a review

i have’nt had much time to create a review on the 2012 movie for the past few days, although i have managed to watch it on the big screen last friday, during its opening day. i was just busy with a lot of things.. but i think it’s not too late to post a review, right?

well, i personally liked the movie because i really enjoyed all the scenes especially the “running away from the disaster” scenes which i feel like i’m in a roller coaster ride. on its opening day, the movie house of waltermart calamba was jampacked, and oviously all of the cinemas showing the movie 2012.

even the center aisle of the theatre was filled with extra monoblock chairs to accomodate the moviegoers who were very excited to see the movie. everybody were shouting and yelling as if they were having a roller coaster ride, just like me. even after the 1st day of showing, that was saturday, all the malls that we’ve been visited had a long qeue on their theatres. most of the malls were showing more than two cinemas on the 2012 movie alone. so, the demand was big to accomodate everyone. i was really amazed by the cinematic effect of the movie, it was awesomely executed in a scary way.

generally, 2012 movie is a modern day “noah’s ark“. so let us learn from the movie itself that we have to do our part in saving our world from destruction. although we don’t know when will be the “end of days”, atleast now, we are aware that it could possibly come soon.

2012 MOVIE SYNOPSIS

The film is inspired by the idea of a global [[2012 phenomenon|doomsday event]] coinciding with the end of the [[maya_calendar#long_Count|Mayan Long Count Calendar's]] current cycle on or around [[December 21]], [[2012]] (the northern hemisphere’s [[winter solstice]]).

Jackson Curtis ([[John Cusack]]) is a divorced father who occasionally works as a limousine driver and a writer, while his ex-wife Kate Curtis ([[Amanda Peet]]) and children Noah ([[Liam James]]) and Lily ([[Morgan Lily]]) live together with her new boyfriend, Gordon ([[Thomas McCarthy (actor)|Thomas McCarthy]]).
At the Mayan city of [[Tikal]] in [[Guatemala]], the victims of a [[mass suicide]] seem to adhere to the [[Maya calendar|Mayan calendar]], which predicts the [[end of the world]] will coincide with a Galactic Alignment, which is to occur on December 21 of 2012, the date of the northern hemisphere’s [[winter solstice]].

The IHC (Institute for Human Continuity), a secret organization, has realized the situation and begins constructing vast arks beneath the [[Himalayas|Himalayan mountains]] designed to withstand most natural disasters in order to save both [[humanity]], significant species, and the greatest treasures of mankind for when doomsday finally happens.

There are arguments however about how and when the governments of the world will alert their fellow citizens and even discussions about how the remaining survivors will be selected to survive [[Armageddon]], but when they discover that the global [[cataclysm]] is happening much faster than expected, they must race to these ships to save the human race before all is lost.

Meanwhile on a day trip to [[Yellowstone]] with his two young children, Jackson meets Charlie Frost ([[Woody Harrelson]]), who hosts his own radio segment and blog about his belief that the Mayans are right about 2012.

Over the coming days vast cracks are found within the [[San Andreas Fault]] in [[California]], and despite the pleas from the government that everything is fine, Jackson isn’t convinced. Hiring a private plane and gathering crucial supplies he races to Kate’s home to save himself and his family from the [[pole shift hypothesis|Earth's crust displacement]] occurring all around them.

After a long and dangerous race through the collapsing streets to get to the [[Santa Monica Airport]], Gordon uses his pilot skills to get the family to safety as the runway crumbles beneath them. After they take off, they fly dangerously through [[Los Angeles]] as the entire city collapses into oblivion. As they look back, the entire cityscape has already started to slide into the Pacific.

As the plane eventually runs low on fuel, the group finds itself obligated to land in [[Wyoming]] in order to refuel. Jackson uses this opportunity to get in contact with Charlie. Against Kate’s will, Jackson runs off with his daughter towards Charlie’s van. Upon his arrival, he finds an empty van and soon realizes that Charlie has left. However, Charlie informs his followers on the radio that he has decided to go into the mountains to watch the imminent catastrophe. Jackson takes the van and speeds off to find him. His pursuit proves to be successful, but the ground below them begins to rumble. Jackson warns Charlie that they must leave, yet he refuses as he finds the scenery “too beautiful.” Before Jackson escapes, Charlie informs him that he has a map in his van that will provide information concerning a possible escape route. As the volcanoes erupt behind him, he heads back towards the plane.

Again, Jackson finds himself on a dangerous race as the large chunks of boulders strike the ground nearby. Upon his arrival, his daughter charges out of the van into the plane, but Jackson remains in the van to search for the map. He recalls that Charlie told him it was “between [[Roswell]] and [[Marilyn Monroe]],” yet he takes too long to find it. As the earth opens up, the van falls into a gap. The family is horrified, but must leave before it is too late. The ground is continually crumbling closer and closer. Meanwhile, Jackson finds himself falling but manages to grab onto the ledge. He pulls himself back up and runs back to the plane as the ground behind him continues to collapse. He is just fast enough to enter the plane.

It soon becomes clear that it’s not just [[California]] that’s experiencing disaster: The [[Yellowstone Caldera|Yellowstone Supervolcano]] erupts, [[Las Vegas metropolitan area|Las Vegas]] is destroyed by a massive chasm that cuts through the [[Las Vegas Strip|Strip]] and by an ash cloud from the Yellowstone eruption, massive earthquakes begin to occur in [[South America]] (destroying the cities of [[Rio de Janeiro]] and [[Buenos Aires]]), [[Washington D.C.]] is flooded by an enormous tsunami in which the [[USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67)|USS John F. Kennedy]] crushes the [[White House]] and [[St. Peter's Basilica]] in [[Vatican City]] crumbles into oblivion, killing thousands in prayer. Another tsunami hits [[New York City]], toppling the [[Statue of Liberty]]. As massive tsunamis began to sweep across the Earth, the U.S. government declares the end of the world.

A group of survivors, including Jackson and his family, must fight their way to [[China]] before they can board the great arks and save themselves from the gigantic tidal waves flooding the Earth. They still find themselves in the plane, but realize it will not suffice to fly all the way to China.

They agree that they must land at an airport to find a better plane. While they manage to find one, it is filled with many other individuals. However, Gordon stumbles upon one of his old clients, Tamara ([[Beatrice Rosen]]). She is with Russian millionaire Yuri Karpov ([[Zlatko Buric]]).

Upon closer investigation, the family realizes that Yuri has bought a plane to escape to China. Jackson pleads him to allow his family, but Yuri initially refuses. However, his pilot Sasha ([[Johann Urb]]) alerts him that he requires a co-pilot. Jackson seizes this opportunity and tells Yuri that Gordon is an experienced pilot. Subsequently, the group board a large Russian plane towards China. Below them, the airport is destroyed by earthquakes.

As they are in the air, Sasha realizes that the plane does not contain sufficient fuel to fly all the way to China. He warns Gordon of this and both agree that they will have to land in the water. Gordon proceeds to tell this to Jackson. They wake up the others on board to warn them. Kate and Jackson hand life jackets to their children as they prepare themselves for the landing. Meanwhile, Sasha discovers that they are no longer above the ocean.

The Earth’s crust has shifted by thousands of miles and they are heading right towards the [[Himalayas]]. The group must rapidly concoct a new plan. They all decide to go into cars while Sasha opens the door from the cockpit. Yet time is running out and the plane is charging right into the mountains. Gordon must abandon Sasha and runs back to the car just in time to escape with the others. However, Sasha lands the plane on a cliff. The weight of the plane causes the ground below it to break leading Sasha to his death.

The remaining group members has managed to land safely with the cars. Tamara weeps and demands they go back to find Sasha. Yet before they have time to act, Chinese helicopters holding large animals, such as elephants and giraffes, fly above them. One helicopter notices the group and goes down to greet them. However, the group immediately understand that they will need to pay to get into the helicopter. Yuri pays for him and his sons, but refuses to pay for the others. Before boarding the helicopter, he tells Tamara he knew of her relationship with Sasha.

The group now has no choice but to walk through the mountains in an attempt to find others. Soon enough, a car drives by them. In it are Buddhist monk, Nima (Osric Chau), and his grandmother ([[Lisa Lu]]). While they first drive past the group, Jackson throws a rock at it. The car backs up and they allow them to join along for the ride to meet Nima’s brother Tenzin ([[Chin Han]]). He has a plan to escape.

Upon their arrival, Tenzin is infuriated. He tells Nima his plan could not account for so many people and that, therefore, the others would not be able to join along. Nonetheless, Jackson and Kate insist that they take the children. After further discussion, Tenzin allows the entire group to join. His plan was to sneak into an ark that had been created by governments around the world as a way to save a select few.

Jackson and family manage to sneak into the ark with the help of Tenzin. Carl Anheuser ([[Oliver Platt]]), [[White House Chief of Staff|the President's Chief of Staff]] who is now in charge of the ark, orders that the gates of the arks to be closed as the supplies are not enough to cater for all the survivors.  Thomas Wilson, the 45th [[President of the United States]] ([[Danny Glover]]), is dismayed at Anheuser’s action and convinces the leaders of various nations to open the gates to save the survivors.

When closing the gates, part of Tenzin’s leg is crushed. Gordon also died though Jackson made an attempt to save him. The cable brought by Tenzin was stuck in between the gears and the gears are grind to a complete halt. The gate is now partially closed. As the tsunami hits the ark, one of the main supporting structure of the ark breaks down the the ark is now floating in the direction of [[Mount Everest]]. The engines of the ark cannot be started even with manual settings unless the gates are closed.

Jackson decides to give it a try and remove the cable from the gear with the aid of his son. He succeeded. The gears are operating again and the gate closes. The engines are activated and are engaged in a reverse position to avoid an impact. However, it still hits Mount Everest but with minimal damage. The survivors inside the ark cheers for Jackson who managed to save them.

When the catastrophe ends, the water recedes and the world unfloods. The captain of the ark along with the sister arks decide that the [[Cape of Good Hope]] in South Africa is a good place to lead a normal life. The survivors inside walk out from the ark and are able to see the sunlight and the vast sea again. The film ends with the sight of the African continent, capable of supporting human life in the future.

FRIDAY THE 13TH

it’s friday the 13th! there’s a scary stigma on this particular date among the fanatics of the “black world”. some says. that friday the 13th is a significant day for witches, vampires and other elements related to those. because this day, they acquire and attain their powers on its best, and they become so powerful.

friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of good or bad luck. In the gregorian calendar, this day occurs at least once, but at most three times a year. Any month’s 13th day will fall on a Friday if the month starts on a Sunday. In this year 2009, this applies to the months of february, march, and november. and the next instance of this appears on the calendar for the year 2015. hmm.. quite a long wait!

wahahaha.. really scary.. but for others, it’s a time to have fun and enjoy as if it’s haloween! and to spook around with friends to share their “not so ordinary scary experiences”.

some pessimists believe that this day is a jinx in some sorts. like, they think that “bad lucks” may happen if you do something significant for this day.. like, starting a business, launching a project, buying something, or even going out.

well, for me, there’s no such thing as “bad luck”, though i believe in karma. that whatever we do, good or bad, it comes with an equally deserved karma. so, nothing to worry about friday the 13th.. but as they say, there’s nothing wrong if you would believe it, for as long as it would’nt affect your everyday life in a complicated way.. just like fengshui, right?!

so have a happy and wealthy friday the 13th! it would’nt be a hindrance to have fun this weekend!

NUVALI, the next attraction in the SOUTH

along Paseo de Sta. Rosa, there is a new build community which is called “NUVALI”. it is a high class village in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, which until now, marketing its way up to fill the area.
across the nuvali village is a “hang-out” area, which is called SOLENAD, that has shopping centers and restaurants that caters mainly the residents within the vicinity of sta. rosa and their villagers.

it’s like a combination of a nature park and business center as well. what i like about nuvali is because of the peaceful and discreet ambiance within the place. there are a lot of commercial establishments, that anyone would’nt get bored from. it is also a nice place for work. the convergys, one of the biggest BPO’s in the country today has build their another branch located here.

the cold rush of wind from tagaytay made its way to be felt here which benefited the patrons of the place.
try to visit this place and hang-out with your family.

RED CLIFF, a review

i was very fortunate to came to see the movie, “RED CLIFF“, a John Woo film that is inspired from a Chinese epic. it is a historical drama based on a legendary battle held during the end of Han Dynasty in the 208 A.D.
the story is about the power hungry Prime Minister turned General Cao cao, who has the permission from the Han dynasty Emperor to destroy the two warring kingdoms from the south, and to reign the entire land. General Cao cao was the most powerful armed force leader during his time, having hundreds of thousands of soldiers that will fight under his command.
as Cao cao’s forces become more aggressive, the two rival warlords, Liu Bei and Sun Quan decided to form an alliance to make their forces become stonger to fight with the giant General Cao cao. this happened through the great mind of Sun Quan’s trusted advisor war hero Zhou Yu.
Zhou Yu played the major role in all the war tactics of the two kingdoms.
the movie shows more of the “art of war” principles, and all the strategies that should be consider and should be made to win in any battle.
some of the strategies used by the alliance was humorous yet effective. the knowledge and wisdom of their war adviser has made them a powerful army not by numbers, but by heart.
it has an overwhelming passion and courage from the war leaders that everyone will get inspired as they watch the movie.
the rebel warlords banded together to mount a heroic campaign unrivalled in history that changes the face of China forever.

the more you know about the art of war and the forces of nature, the most likely you will win in a battle that you think you are out numbered.

4 stars for red cliff!

NEVER TOO LATE FOR THE OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTH

i have always been a believer that education is only the answer to poverty. unfortunately, many Filipinos, and other children around the world has been deprived from their right to be educated formally. the main reason? poverty. they have no other means to suffice the budget on education for their family. let me share you my story..

on my third year in highschool, our family had a financial crisis, causing my studies to suffer. so i had no choice but to stop going to school. i never opted to transfer in a public school because i dont want to experience any “culture shock”. so i became an “out-of-school youth”.

at 14, i experienced to work in a grocery store as a saleslady, bagger and a merchandiser at the same time. it was really a tough job for a teen like me during that time. but still i was happy because i was helping my family.

i was out of school for two long years, and just finished second year highschool then. it was really painful to me but i have to be resilient during tough times.

fortunately, a great opportunity came into me as i went to my previous highschool in alabang. when they learned that i didnt continue on my highshool, they referred me to the DECS Division Office in Alabang to take the PEPT or the Philippine Educational Placemet Test. it’s an acceleration examination for people who has been out of school for a long time that will give them an opportunity to skip a certain level higher from what they have achieved. it depends on the capability of the examiner to where he can accelerate himself, based on stock knowledge and logical reasoning.

and gladly, i passed. i was accelerated from second year highschool to college level, skipping 2 years of third and fourth year in highschool. that’s why i never experienced JS Prom ( very unfortunate, lol!). it was such a blessing because the years that i stopped from school just became an offset of what i missed in highschool. it’s like i never stopped from school! i have saved a lot of time, energy and money from skipping the two-year highschool levels! and i consider that as one of my greatest achievements.

that was a major turning point in my life. so i entered college without any knowledge about chemistry and physics! i only have the urge and exitement to finally go back to school, and learn the academics! i had a tough first year in college so, i had to double the effort to learn. english and literature was never a problem to me back then, but when it comes to numbers? please spare me! (haha lol!) through the help of my friends, and my hard work, i was able to finish college in electronics engineering. then, had my work afterwards. there you go..

so to all the OSY’s out there, take the next step. inquire the nearest DECS Division Office in your area about the process of registration and the whole examination procedure. they will give you guidelines on how to avail the opportunity and the documents they require. GOODLUCK!

GOODBYE PEPENG aka PARMA

yesterday, the nation sets all eyes to the super typhoon “pepeng aka parma” as it approaches the soil of our country, the Philippines. everyone was advised to stay calm and remain alert while preparing for the storm to hit the land..
there were some rain showers and gutsy wind during the afternoon in the National Capital Region. PAGASA projected that the destination of the storm will hit the same spot where previously typhoon “ondoy aka ketsana” flooded the whole area. death tolls were still increasing as time passes because some of the affected areas are still under water..
diseases brought by the flood debris, and garbages are very alarming. usual illnesses, like rashes, and other skin infections are easily spreading within the crowded evacuation centers. diarrhea and other water borne diseases are increasing too. even the school classes were affected, because schools are being used as temporary shelters of the affected families.
the typhoon pepeng did not hit the NCR as what the PAGASA projected it to be. it went up to the northern part of Luzon, along Cagayan and Isabella. It even hit the Bicol region first, before going north.
everyone in Manila, were relieved by the direction of the typhoon, but still it has caused a lot of damage to properties of the local residents of northern Luzon.
it might be goodbye pepeng, but it seems like there’s another typhoon coming..

THE UNTIMELY SONG

i remember the song of ASIN, Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran..

way back in the 70′s, artists are aware of the people’s abuse on our environment.. and this turmoil that’s happening today is what it’s all about..

a time to reflect..

Repeat refrain 2

PREPARING FOR PEPENG

our country, specifically the National Capital Region was recently hit by a typhoon named locally by PAGASA as “ondoy”. its international name was ketsana. the said storm left the NCR and other areas around it flooded almost roof-high.
the typhoon did not spare anyone, even the rich people who lives in villages around Metro Manila.
it was a big disaster that the national government declared the affected areas under the state of calamity.
till now, a lot of areas in other provinces affected by the typhoon are still in flood. most of them is still waist-high.
our country has not recovered yet from the turmoil, and another super typhoon is coming, locally named “pepeng” and “parma” as its international name. we cannot do anything to stop it, and all we can do is to prepare for the worst.

  • first, we must secure the basic tools or gadget that we need when the typhoon comes.

we need candles, matches or lighters, food, cellphones, flashlights, drinking water, a transistor radio, and other communication gadgets.

  • then we must put in a plastic bag or in any bag that cannot be penetrated by water all our important documents, ID’s, money, and all the important things that could possibly fit our bag, that we can possibly carry when we need to evacuate and leave our houses.

life is the most important in this world. there’s always an opportunity to start all over again.
let’s all pray that the typhoon wont do any harm.
